The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society is a nonprofit membership organization, founded in 1827, dedicated to building community through gardening, greening and learning. PHS offers programs and events for gardeners of all levels, and works with volunteers, organizations, agencies and businesses to create and maintain vibrant green spaces. Proceeds from the PHS Philadelphia Flower Show and donations from foundations, corporations, government and individuals support PHS programs.
The PHS Philadelphia Flower Show is America’s premiere horticultural event, providing inspirational, informative and entertaining displays for a quarter-million visitors from around the world each year. The show includes landscape and floral exhibits, live competitions, educational displays, lectures, special evening events, and a variety of satellite activities. The show has a $61 million economic impact on the Greater Philadelphia region.
PHS initiatives include Plant One Million, a multi-state campaign to restore the region's tree coverage, and PHS City Harvest, which creates green jobs and supports a network of community gardeners who raise fresh food for more than a thousand families in need each week during the growing season.
PHS manages many of Philadelphia's treasured public spaces, including the landscapes at Logan Square, the Azalea Garden, the grounds behind the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the recently restored gardens of the Rodin Museum. The annual PHS City in Bloom event refreshes garden beds from City Hall to Logan Square.
The McLean Library at PHS headquarters, 20th and Arch Streets, has 15,000 books on gardening and plant care, botany, urban greening, and more, including a circulation collection of books and videos for PHS members, and historic, rare gardening books and seed catalogs from the 16th through 20th centuries.
